The Engagement Model is a framework used in schools to assess and support children with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) who are not engaged in subject-specific learning. It focuses on how pupils engage rather than what they achieve.
🔹 Key Aspects of the Engagement Model:
1️⃣ Exploration 🕵️♂️ – How a child investigates and interacts with their environment.
2️⃣ Realisation 💡 – Moments of discovery, where they show awareness of cause and effect.
3️⃣ Anticipation ⏳ – Predicting or expecting something to happen.
4️⃣ Persistence 💪 – Repeating an activity or maintaining attention.
5️⃣ Initiation 🗣️ – Taking independent action to start communication or an activity.
It’s a statutory requirement 📜 for schools in England to use this model for Key Stage 1 & 2 pupils with complex learning needs who are not assessed using standard curriculum measures.
This approach ensures that learning is personalised 🏫✨ and helps educators track progress in a meaningful way.
Join this on demand webinar to gain everything you need to implement the Engagement Model effectively in your school!
