Book review: The Colour Monster by Anna Llenas

This lovable little monster, is perfect for preschool, key stage one and beyond. Particularly, if you are starting out on a journey to both explore and express feelings. With simple yet effective illustrations, The Colour Monster is a must for your school PHSE resource collection or for your own bookshelf!

With mainly 5 star ratings on Amazon, this book will help children to both understand and articulate their feelings when accompanied with quality discussion. It can often be useful for older children or those with SEN, who are struggling with their emotions. It can also be used alongside the Zones Of Regulation, which is a popular primary school self-regulation program (although the colours are not a 100% match).

The monster starts by being rainbow coloured because he is ‘all mixed up and confused,’ like many children (and adults!), when they experience big feelings that they don’t understand how to respond to. The monster goes through a journey of colours, both positive and negative, exploring each one in turn and has accurate matching facial expressions! The last page (The colour Monster in love), also ends with a question to promote further discussion.

As an art link, the pictures can easily be copied by children and turned in to an effective display. The Colour Monster can be found on Amazon: Click here for Amazon link, or I always like to buy my books second hand on Ebay!
