Wow what a term; what a year. As the world has pressed the giant reset button, it’s also a good time for individuals to pause and take stock(ings). Here are 10 pledges for your Christmas break:
- Breathe. If your circumstances allow have a duvet day. Do as little as possible without the guilt – you’ve earned it.
- Give yourself a massive pat on the back the fact you have made it this far is amazing. Many of us have picked up a few bruises along the way!
- If you have appreciated your colleagues/head/cleaners support tell them! They will be grateful for the feedback. Also remember that despite what we read, most families really appreciate everything that schools and staff have done for their children, even if it is not communicated, you are appreciated.
- Be with your bubble, cherish what you have, give gratitude and catch up with friends online. Plan murder mystery evenings and task master style challenges. These sorts of things take me out of my comfort zone but are fun when you get stuck in!
- Those of you with children, get out some board games or join in with their online gaming. Your presence is more important to them than presents (although they like these as well!).
- Ditch the school work. Many of us still have shed loads to do. I always try and do some as soon as I break up and the rest the day before term. Or just do it little and often – marking 3 books at a time is less boring than 30! Have a straight 10 days in the middle involving nothing school related.
- Get outside. Wrap up warm and kick some leaves or jump in muddy puddles (waterproof trousers recommended). Fresh air and a take away hot chocolate is good for the soul.
- Reflect on the term and if it was too heavy going, consider how the new year could bring some positive changes. If you are a person that has so much work you would consider working on Christmas Day, reassess your employment options; most schools would not over burden staff in this way.
- Celebrate the new year because it’s highly probable that next year will be an improvement.
- I am enough. It is only a job. Repeat affirmation as required.
Wishing all my readers and their families a restful Christmas and New year!
